Racy Turkish diplomat Kemal Pamuk blackmailed a servant into leading him into Lady Mary's bed where he died in the night.
In a frantic bid to avoid scandal Lady Mary is forced to carry his corpse back to his room after enlisting the help of the countess.
And now Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes has revealed the storyline was all true.
Fellowes said the story came from a friend of his wife's who owned a great house.
Speaking at the The Times Cheltenham Literary Festival he said his friend had discovered the family secret after glancing through his great aunt's diary.
He told The Times: 'In the diary was this account of a diplomat. They had a passage that was only for single women. One of them had smuggled this diplomat up to her room and he died,
'He said she was at her wits' end and woke up the matron.'
He added the matron woke up everyone in the corridor and they carried the dead diplomat back into his own room without waking anybody.
Fellowes told The Times: 'And as I heard it, I thought one day this will come in handy.'
His friend then looked in his great-grandfather's diary and saw a very different account of the 'great tragedy' of the passing of the diplomat.
Fellowes told The Times he will enver reveal the identity of the diplomat or the house because he was so grateful to his friend for passing on the secret.

Julian Fellowes: People wouldn't enjoy Downton Abbey at a glacial paceBut the period drama creator insists that standards have not been lowered to appeal to younger viewers

The creator and writer of Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes, has defended his hit ITV drama against criticism that the second series is closer to a soap opera than a traditional period piece.

"I have heard that some viewers have commented on the pace at which this series is moving forward," said Fellowes, speaking at a Radio Times Television Tales event yesterday as part of the Cheltenham Literary Festival.

"But people wouldn't enjoy it if it [Downton] moved at a glacial pace", he continued. "I hate dramas where you can go into the kitchen, make a sandwich, come back and have missed nothing, so the pace is fast but no faster than the last series. There may be more characters, locations and story lines in this series which means what we are portraying is denser and may seem faster paced."

"The blood pressure is definitely raised this time round and that stress may well make people feel the pace is faster", added Dan Stevens, who plays heir apparent Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey.

But after such unexpectedly high viewing figures for the first run last year (an average of over nine million viewers per episode), is there pressure to dumb down the programme in order to appeal to the post X Factor audience on Sunday night?

"We definitely haven't lowered standards to appeal to younger viewers" insisted Fellowes. "We don't want to spoon feed our audience. There are still references that younger members of the audience may not understand, and I don't feel the need to explain them because I like the idea of inspiring people to go on the internet and look them up. I do not want to patronise our audience and I don't want to exclude anyone from enjoying Downton Abbey."

"We obviously depend on the loyal costume drama viewers but I like the fact that we are attracting new viewers," added executive producer Gareth Neame. "I am not in the least ashamed of our big ambitions. We were expecting most of The X Factor audience to turn off and the fact that they haven't is fantastic."

Neame also commented on the much-maligned Aviva insurance adverts which play before and after every advertisement break on the programme, attracting a number of complaints to Ofcom and ITV.

"It would be ideal to watch Downton without the adverts, but without them it wouldn't exist," he said. "It's not great that the narrative is broken up by ads but it has become part of the phenomenon. We have no control of them, or the Aviva deal. I have to be careful about what I say here, but we gave them some feedback and I noticed a change in them last week."

And so, with huge audiences continuing to flock to the period drama, surely there are plans for a third series?

"I would like to think that we will be back next year," said Fellowes hesitantly, before admitting that he always had three parts planned for Downton.

He added: "The original concept in my optimistic head was for the first series to start towards the end of the Edwardian era, the second to be set during World War One and the third in the 1920s. In the 20s there are big changes, new inventions, different expectations I can't wait to explore."

Bates (Brendan Coyle) is in focus as his errant wife threatens to rain scandal upon Downton Abbey. Lady Mary is forced to call in some favours and risk being in Sir Richard Carlisle’s power. The Earl (Hugh Bonneville) is somewhat out of the loop, making excuses for his wife, hearing of his daughter’s engagement through the papers and only just managing to give the say-so on a new maid to replace Ethel Parks (Amy Nuttall).

Meanwhile, the secret baby and mother are doing well. Entreaties to the father are getting nowhere and it seems that maybe Ethel isn’t the only single mother in the village. Marriage, divorce and children are becoming increasingly complicated matters in between the ravages of war. Everyone is shell-shocked by the pace of change and the breakdown of social structure. Even the revolutionary Branson (Allen Leech) is shocked to hear that the Tsar’s family were shot and craves a solid family life, whatever controversial form it may take.

Devastating news from the front brings a radical change in the future of Downton. A re-ordering of relationships means a financially secure future for one of the staff and a not so secure future for those upstairs. Violet (Maggie Smith) does her best to pull some strings, but there is little she can do in the face of so much upheaval except bully a few local inferiors. Even Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) is nursing soldiers by the time the family have regrouped.

With news that a third series is on the cards for Downton Abbey, one might be forgiven for imagining that the production is turning into the world’s most expensive and high-brow soap opera. More so, when one considers the events of season two, episode four, when the storyline turns salacious and viewers get to see a bit of shoulder.

The Dowager Countess is making trouble by spotting Sybil’s weakness for a member of working classes.Mary does her best to guide her younger sister in a path better than her own, but is accused of meddling and snobbery.

Isobel is riled by the challenge to her position as a senior nurse and leaves the house to tend to the wounded in France. With Matthew also gone, the servants of Isobel’s house are at a loose end and begin to look for other opportunities.

Helping wounded soldiers gets a number of the kitchen staff into hot water, though the Countess’s late change of heart on all practical issues relating to the war gives them something of a reprieve.

Meanwhile, Thomas asserts his independence by not telling the Earl of the return of Mr Bates. The Earl is shocked by the news and takes the unusual step of paying a personal visit to a public house.

The trifles of those back home pale into insignificance when news of a development on the front gets back to Downton. Nobody can concentrate on matters at hand with the news hanging over them. There is a positive development, however, when a friendly face returns to the estate bringing a cheer to the staff and family alike.

Mrs Hughes has to manage the personal affairs of the household when Thomas begins to get high-handed with Daisy. Not only that, but she is faced with a major dilemma, right at the end of the show, when it is revealed that a member of the household will be having a baby.

Downton Abbey’s politically minded Irish chauffeur Branson asks the Earl’s daughter Lady Sybil to run away with him. What’s On TV talked to Allen Leech about what’s making Branson tick during the second series of the ITV1 period drama...

Why is Branson and Lady Sybil’s relationship still pretty much unrequited? Is that about to change when he asks her to run away with him this week?
“After laying his cards on the table in the first episode – he took his hat off and everything – you can see he’s completely in love and infatuated with Lady Sybil. He did get a rebuttal at first, but being a headstrong Irishman he doesn’t give up. There is a fire and spirit about Sybil which appeals to him. She’s interested in politics and he stokes that. He is quite well educated, and throughout the series we see him constantly questioning her and a definite bond growing between them. Whether they do get together, and can cross the class divide, is essentially the personal drama for Branson.”

Branson’s not only got romance on his mind, there’s the Irish question and his opposition to the war. How are those affecting him?
“What’s nice about this second series is that there are lots of issues for Branson, as there’s the question of conscription, and the Easter Uprising in Ireland happened in 1916, so they affect him deeply. So he has big decisions to make with his political ideals, and how he feels about Lady Sybil."

Is Branson hoping things will soon change politically in Britain and Ireland?
“When Downton is requisitioned by military authorities to be a convalescent home, Branson see that as a signal that things at last will be different. The way people view the working class and the aristocracy begins to change. It gives Branson hope that things won’t be the same after the war. He’s always reading the papers and lecturing the staff about what’s happening in the world.”

Is it true you keep the cast amused with impressions of them?
“Sometimes I do yeah! I do Jim Carter (the butler Carson) well – he’s pretty easy because you just drop your voice as low as it can go. He’s like the headmaster of us all and I’m like his naughty pupil doing impressions behind his back. Off set, we’re a very joke-around kind of cast, which is nice!”

Christmas cliffhanger for Downton devotees with viewers not knowing who lives and who dies

Downton Abbey fans can look forward to a dramatic Christmas special, one of the show's stars revealed yesterday.
Brendan Coyle, who plays Bates, the valet, hinted the episode will end on a cliffhanger, with viewers not knowing who lives and who dies – suggesting this series will not be the last.
He said: 'There are three shocking twists in store that no-one could have imagined – including us.
'Wait until you see the Christmas special. You're not going to know ho lives or dies – literally.'
It comes just a week after Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary, teased viewers of the ITV1 drama by saying 'there's a wedding, a funeral and a sex scene and I'm in one of those'.

Asked if the 'will they, won't they' romance between Bates and maid Anna will have a happy ending, Coyle, 47, replied: 'I can't tell you that, but I will say Anna's a very determined woman and isn't prepared to give up Bates.
'There's a spectacular conclusion on its way, so hang on to your hats, folks, you're in for a bumpy ride.

'The whole country seems to be rooting for them.'
Coyle also said he was aware that he had become something of a sex symbol for female viewers.
'It's very flattering. All the women who know me find it hilarious. But it won't last – Dan Stevens (who plays Matthew Crawley) wears a uniform this series, so I'm finished,' he said.

Believing that the way to defeat The Hun is to keep domestic order, even when his footmen are being called away to fight in the trenches.
Now actor Jim Carter, who plays Lord Grantham’s redoubtable servant, is about to take on his own personal trial – a charity cycle ride across Ghana.
“I think Mr Carson would find it rather undignified. It’s alright for a footman but not for a butler,” said Carter, 63.

Later tucked up in his bed, he had recovered enough to offer some fatherly advice to Lady Mary, played by Michelle Dockery, about matters of the heart.
I can reassure everyone that Mr Carson is fairly indestructible and is on the mend,” revealed Harrogate-born Carter, who flew out to Africa on Friday.
“We will be cycling in temperatures into the high 30s on pretty rough roads. Perfect conditions for a portly butler clad in Lycra.”
Four days after his return from that Equatorial heat, Carter will be filming wintry scenes for Downton Abbey’s Christmas Special.
With speculation that ITV1 will give it pride of place in their Christmas Night schedule to ensure a festive ratings win.
The special follows the end of the current eight-part series and features the events of New Year’s Eve 1919 leading into 1920.
A prelude to a third series, to be set in the Roaring Twenties.

“I shall be covering myself in Factor 60 sun tan lotion in Ghana because I can’t turn up looking like Carson’s Mexican brother. So I shall be trying to keep the sun off the face at least.
“Downton will be a nice contrast to come home to. But it will be interesting to see if Mr Carson is walking properly in the Christmas Special.”
It includes the Annual Servants’ Ball, with Carson due to trip the light fantastic with the Dowager Countess of Grantham, played by Dame Maggie Smith.
“I’ve said to them, ‘I shall need some help with the dancing.’ It’s not my forte. So Mr Carson will proceed around the floor in a dignified fashion. He won’t be doing anything dramatic.”

In the first series it was revealed that the butler had once been part of a song-and-dance stage act called The Cheerful Charlies.
Viewers will see Carson briefly sing again in episode four(Oct 9) of this second series when Downton stages a poignant concert for the wounded officers under their care.
“I’m not really a singer,” confessed Carter. “But full marks to the sound department for getting that right!”
His charity bike ride training has included cycling from the north London home he shares with Harry Potter actress wife Imedla Staunton to Ealing Studios, where Downton’s downstairs scenes are filmed.
“It was easy to get there in the morning because it’s vaguely downhill. But it was a bit more of a struggle coming back slightly uphill after a 12-hour day.”
The veteran actor, whose many other roles include retired military man Captain Brown in Cranford, brings Carson’s sense of order to the capital’s roads.

“Thankfully I haven’t had any accidents. I’m confident, and being pretty large I tell the traffic where I’m going in no uncertain terms.
“And I do obey the rules of the road. I don’t jump red lights, which I don’t approve of. As I’m also a driver I understand how annoying that can be for people.”
He will cycle hundreds of miles in Ghana over six days to raise money for clean water in the impoverished rural town of Tafo, where the ride finishes.
Carter is a friend of British TV comedy executive and producer Humphrey Barclay, who was made a chief of the village when he attended the funeral of actor Christopher Asante, who starred in the Channel 4 sitcom Desmond’s, which ended in 1994.
This will be his tenth charity ride. The previous nine – Jordan, Costa Rica, Laos, Vietnam, India, Namibia, Chile and Argentina and London to Paris (twice) – were in aid of the National Deaf Children’s Society.
“I came off once, in India, but in a very gentle way when my wheel got stuck in a rut and the bike tipped over. I’ve been cycling for 55 years, so I know how to look after myself reasonably well and I don’t take enormous risks.
“Underneath my exterior I do have a level of determination to get there. You have to face the challenge and you have to complete it. I pedal every inch of the way,” added the actor, who will be part of a team of 25 riders.
The Downton cast are fully behind Carter’s off screen adventure.
“They’ve all been fantastically supportive and a lot of them have sponsored me. Although I think they’re slightly bemused that this large creature is actually heading off on a bike.”
His global audience of fans will be hoping Mr Carson returns to the big house safe and sound. “People have great affection for Carson. It’s very nice to see the amount of pleasure people are getting from the series.
“Just today I bumped into a couple of my neighbours and they said, ‘We’re so glad to see it back on. Sunday nights are just marvellous now.’ I’m delighted.
“It also means I give better value to charities now. Although I’ve done 40 films and 100 TV shows, I don’t court publicity so people might not have instantly recognised me.
“But now you press the Downton button and everybody goes, ‘Oh yes, of course, Mr Carson.’ That’s good.”
The veteran star has also become a favourite among the young ladies of Downton, both above and below stairs.
“There’s nothing like a Carson cuddle,” confessed Sophie McShera, who plays kitchen maid Daisy.
“That’s only because they’re frightened of me,” he joked.
“Heaven’s above, aren’t they all gorgeous these women? They’re safe in my arms. Like an old sofa.”

Here are some edited highlights of what he said then:

“The First World War is a bloody disappointment to Carson. Having half his workforce taken off to war is extremely inconvenient. Having maids serving in the dining room is a nightmare, never mind what’s going on at the Front. He’s quite narrow in his perspectives. He thinks it’s very important to keep up standards.

“He does get very stressed by it all. His health suffers because he allows himself to get into a state.”

He spoke of how the phenomenal success of Downton Abbey proved that viewers still had an appetite for top drama.

“It looks good and it looks expensive. And it might be that people are tired of cheap, rubbish reality TV.

“It’s good quality work done properly. Given proper attention. That’s nice. Attention to detail, getting it right.

“Downton is very cinematic. You see the colours and the size of the house and the landscape, it looks like cinema rather than narrow TV.

“And when the dining table is out in here, it fills three quarters of the room and you’ve got 12 characters around it, all of whom speak.

“That doesn’t happen in modern drama. You get a Detective Inspector, a Sergeant and a typist, don’t you? So it’s big scale, which is very nice.”

What about a potential romance with housekeeper Mrs Hughes? (Phyllis Logan)

“I think the nation is desperate for it to happen, isn’t it? There’s a huge yearning for romance out there. It doesn’t happen in the second series, I can tell you that. But we remain friends.”

Phyllis Logan, who was sat next to Jim, added: “There seems to be a yearning.

“But they are almost like an old married couple anyway.”
