Spanish Flu sweeps through Downton, leaving Carson, Lavinia and Cora very ill. Lavinia and Matthew's wedding preparations are thrown into disarray and she catches Matthew and Mary kissing and later takes a turn for the worst and dies. Matthew feels responsible and is adamant that he and Mary do not deserve to be together. Anna tells Bates they should marry, but there is a shock in store when he's arrested for Vera's murder! As O'Brien looks after a sick Cora and tries to confess her past sins, Robert kisses a smitten Jane, but she decides to leave as Cora rallies.
Ethel is pleased when she discovers that Major Bryant's parents ask to see Charlie, but when they want to give him a new life without her involvement, she cannot part with him.
Branson has got a job as a journalist in Dublin and Sybil is determined to go with him, but when he announces the news, Robert unsuccessfully tries to pay him off, then later gives them his blessing. A cunning Thomas makes himself indispensable by helping out the stricken household and Carson realises he cannot get rid of him.

Описание от Global Herald - обещают три возможные свадьбы.

A few surprises are in store for viewers of Downton Abbey with developments on every front. The reconstruction of relationships and the economy after the war are not as simple as fixing the bomb sites and broken limbs. The women of the household all feel a continuing draw to work and even employment while the Earl wishes he could turn back the clock.
Rationing and lack of opportunity force desperate people into the black market and begging. Relationships forged while the spotlight was on Europe certainly do not conform to the old standards. The household will find itself shocked and scandalised by the new society of 1919.
Episode seven of this blockbuster series will see the lives of the aristocrats and servants brought marginally closer together by staff shortages and the crumbling divisions between them. Nevertheless, the Dowager Countess knows that the gentry play a long game and she encourages her granddaughters to be wise in their choices.
Mary is growing cold under the tutelage of her safe-bet fiancé and even Sir Richard is surprised by her cruelty. The post-war world is still a cold place for both the upper and lower classes, though some good news does bring joy to the household.
Three weddings are on the cards, but who will it be?

Not many people know that Downton Abbey star Jim Carter and Oscar-nominated Imelda Staunton are married in real life. Here Alan Jackson talks to Britain's leading theatrical couple: and finds them reassuringly down-to-earth.

Two's company
It’s a glorious morning and the shimmering pitches of Hampstead Cricket Club in north London are full of exuberant youngsters in pristine whites. It seems wonderfully apt to watch Jim Carter and Imelda Staunton stroll into this quintessentially English scene, accompanied by their little dog Molly. It’s a rare few hours off from a busy work schedule for these highly bankable actors, who are celebrating their 28th wedding anniversary this autumn, and they’re visibly happy to spend it in each other’s company in their adopted ‘back garden’. Carter is the club chairman, and regards it as a second home.

As one of our best-known and most successful thespian marriages, do they ever think of themselves as a ‘golden couple’ I wonder? Carter’s impressive eyebrows beetle up in surprise. ‘We don’t think of ourselves in those terms, do we? We recognise that we’re lucky, ’he says, turning to his wife. She nods in agreement. ‘I know it sounds banal, but we’ve both got a job, we’ve got a lovely garden, we’ve got a wonderful daughter, doggy... They don’t seem extraordinary things to me. Maybe if we had three yachts and eight homes and blah, blah, blah, but this is quite ordinary, and I think it is extraordinary because of that.’

Now 63, Carter is of course stern-but- fair Mr Carson the butler in the wildly popular ITV series Downton Abbey. Carter’s theory for its success is that ‘unlike Jane Austen, it’s recognisable history. My mum was born when series two is taking place; cars and phones are coming in; it’s not a land of remote manners.’

Staunton, 55, with her starring role in an earlier popular period saga, Cranford (which also featured Carter, alongside the couple’s daughter Bessie as a maid), is no stranger to quality costume drama either. Now, though, she’s in the musical Sweeney Todd with Michael Ball at Chichester Festival Theatre. But she’s not relishing the sense of expectation that comes with it.

‘I’d always want to come in under the wire, as we did with Vera Drake (for which she was Oscar- nominated and won Best Actress awards at the BAFTAs and Venice). I’d rather sneak up and surprise people.’ Although she recently finished an acclaimed run in Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance at London’s Almeida Theatre, her attention has latterly been focused away from the stage, her first professional love: ‘In the past 10 years I’ve really enjoyed filming and become more confident with it, which is easier on my life.’ ‘Life’ is a word that crops up frequently in the conversation of this refreshingly unstarry couple. ‘What’s important is your life, isn’t it?’ says Carter. ‘When you take off the motley and get home, that’s who you really are and that’s the person you’ve got to get right.’

What do they think is the secret to this long and happy union between the five-feet nothing London-born daughter of Irish immigrants and the six-feet-two- inch Yorkshire-born former law student? Staunton embarks on a detailed response that ranges over balance, contentment and the appreciation of one’s blessings. Carter listens carefully: ‘That’s Imelda’s answer. My answer is we make each other laugh.’ Staunton looks at him and her face crumples with pleasure. ‘We do.’

It’s a sight to cherish, quickly revisited when each is asked to pick three adjectives to describe the other. Carter follows Staunton’s ‘honourable, tenacious and hilarious’ with ‘funny, wise and honest’. His pause is precision- timed. ‘So we know nothing about each other.’ The laughter rings out around the cricket club.

But it would be hard to run a marriage alongside careers as wide-ranging and enduring as these (Carter’s long list of past successes includes The Singing Detective, Brassed Off and the Red Riding trilogy; Staunton starred in Peter’s Friends and as the loathsome Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter series) without making some vital decisions at the outset. Carter talks about the importance of juggling their work: ‘We made a commitment not to be separated by this business’. When Bessie, now 17 and an aspiring actress herself, was younger, filming commitments for one of them would be translated into a family holiday for all three. The longest they’ve ever spent apart was the seven weeks Staunton worked on the Ang Lee film Taking Woodstock (2009). ‘You’re working with Ang Lee in Massachusetts in the fall. It doesn’t get better than that. Well, I hated being away for that long,’ she says with feeling.

The key, reveals Carter, is to know when to turn work down. ‘We’re lucky enough that we can say with a bit of confidence another job will come rolling down the line. To be honest, between the cricket club and the garden there’s not much time to fit all this bloody work in.’ It helps too, the pair agree, that they’ve had a similar share of success. ‘We’ve worked pretty equally and that helps. Men aren’t very good at coping if the woman’s off and working,’ says Carter. ‘We know other people where there is an inequality and it puts an enormous strain on the relationship.’

And what effect does it have on an acting couple’s relationship when an unexpected Oscar nomination crops up, as it did for Staunton with her gripping portrayal of the homely Fifties abortionist in Mike Leigh’s Vera Drake (2004). Surely there was a secret part of Carter lamenting, ‘It should have been me!’? ‘Not in the slightest,’ he says. ‘I am utterly devoid of ambition. I’m so proud of Imelda and it was so deserved.’

In their usual understated style, the pair turned the hullabaloo of that awards season – overshadowed by the death of Staunton’s mother Bridie – to their advantage. Staunton won Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival where they enjoyed a family holiday. ‘I remember walking on the beach where they had done Death in Venice and thinking “This is the best it will be,” and it was,’ says Staunton simply. And then they had another family jaunt to California for the Oscars themselves. ‘When you stop enjoying these things it’s time to pack up,’ says Carter.

They met during Richard Eyre’s celebrated 1982 National Theatre production of Guys and Dolls. What were their first impressions of each other? ‘I remember you were sitting in the row behind me at the read-through,’ says Staunton, starting to laugh. ‘I thought, “Who’s that old bloke?”’ Carter chuckles in reply: ‘I thought she was there on work experience.’

They have been together – and working – ever since. Do they ever take their work home with them? ‘I don’t think my work gets over the front doorstep, does it, love?’ says Carter, glancing at his wife, who laughs loudly. ‘I put it on with the costume, that’s my approach. Imelda doesn’t come home in character either,’ adding that during the filming of Vera Drake ‘she left it all behind her and cycled home’.

Cycling is a cause dear to them both. Before reconvening for Downton Abbey’s Christmas special, Carter is off to Ghana for the latest in a long line of charity bike rides. ‘Anyone with a keen eye could have seen Carson cycling to Ealing Studios in his Lycra,’ says Staunton of her husband’s training programme. A vivid mental image of the butler’s Lycra-clad bottom stays with me as they saunter off arm-in-arm, laughing.

In Downton Abbey do you enjoy wearing the period dress as Sybil?
It is such a huge part of the role, it’s so integral to the way that you get in touch with your character and relate back to them and you can’t help but to change the way you walk, sit, stand because a corset will do that.

That kind of period costume instantly takes you from a 21st century life to that period, it’s so helpful. I love that transformation, the physical, visual change is great. I really enjoy that.

Do you ever have any input in what Sybil wears?
It’s pretty much all down to the genius of Susannah Buxton the head costume designer.She’s so brilliant down to such small details that to the untrained eye might not matter or even be noticed but you do start notice. For instance, Sybil's shoes are always flatter and more comfortable than the other two girls because she’s more sensible and needs to be able to get around quickly and wants to, rather than the other girls who squeeze their toes into narrow shoes with higher heels. Mary is more fashionable and Sybil is less so.

Do you ever get dress envy? Is there a particular dress that one of your co-stars has worn?
I do think this year some of Michelle’s (Lady Mary) dresses are amazing but I can’t even begin to moan about dress envy because I come out saying: “Oh, this is so itchy.” And Jo Froggatt (who plays housemaid Anna) is always like: “Hello! I’ve worn the same two dresses for two years!” so I’m absolutely not in a position to complain.

Do you and the rest of the cast hang out backstage?
The three of us - the Crawley sisters - get on so well and we have such a laugh. When I look down at the schedule and realise there’s going to be three of us in a scene, I always think they’re going to have to add another 10 or 20 minutes because we’re going to be laughing. But when we’re all together, the whole cast enjoy each others company, it’s just fantastic fun.

Everyone gets on so well and it’s sort of a little theatre company feeling, it feels like that and it’s just so much fun.

The Royal couple told Jessica Brown Findlay - who plays Lady Sybil Crawley in the ITV drama - they were "huge fans of the show".
The 22-year-old star met the Royal newly-weds at a BAFTA event in Los Angeles, where she said they singled her out to speak to.
She said: "I got to be presented to William and Kate, who was beautiful and lovely and very kind!
"I was flattered and privileged to be presented to the two of them at the BAFTA event in Los Angeles.
"They picked me out and spoke very highly of Downton Abbey, and it was lovely to hear.
They told me that they were huge fans of the show."
She told OK! magazine she was completely in awe of the Duke and Duchess.
"It wasn't exactly all in a day's work for me but it was for them, I'm sure," she said.
"It felt surreal as an actress playing English aristocracy to meet them in LA.
"And as I am scared of flying it was already strange enough to be so far away, so I said to them: 'Can't we do this again in the UK?'
"It was wonderful. I was so starstruck, literally paralysed through the whole meeting."
But the Royal couple weren't the only guests who left Jessica starstruck.
The young actress revealed she spent much of the evening staring at Hollywood star Tom Hanks.
"I get very starstruck and I couldn't stop looking at Tom Hanks when I met him," she said.
"He must have thought I was nuts!"

How do you all get on with playing sisters in Downton Abbey?
Laura: “We are really close. Being part of the whirlwind of Downton Abbey is one thing that brought us together, but all three of us are also from all-sister families. Michelle and I have two sisters, and Jess has one. I definitely think there’s something in that; we can connect with that similar sense of humour.”
Michelle: “We do it with a sense of humour. Wouldn’t it be awful if we actually didn’t like each other? Julian Fellowes writes for sisters so well. I’m one of three girls and although we don’t argue like that, there are similarities.”

Do you all hang out on set when you’re not filming?
Laura: “We share music, watch series on DVD in each other’s trailers and hang out chatting and laughing all day long. If we do the crossword, we take the difficult clues to Jim Carter, who plays Carson. He knows all the answers. He’s the cleverest man in the world! It’s a very happy set.”

Do you all enjoy being a part of the show? It’s such a success.
Michelle: “I guess it’s a launchpad, but I’m still immersed in it. We aren’t available! But it’s an amazing series to be a part of. We’re starting to move into the 1920s, and you can see the fashions changing. I’m intrigued to see what they do with our hair.”
Jessica: “One of the joys of period drama is not being so instantly recognisable. I thought someone recognised me once, but they just wanted me to buy them cigarettes because they were underage. I was so embarrassed.”
Laura: “The chance to be a part of these stories is fantastic. I know if I wasn’t in the show I would be addicted to watching it. I’m still pinching myself most days. We start the Christmas special this week and I can’t wait to get started!”

Robert declares that the ceasefire will begin on the 11th November. Isobel has plans for Downton to continue to help the war’s wounded in some way but Cora has other ideas.
Thomas continues his scheming, this time with encouragement from Mrs Patmore.
Elsewhere below stairs, Bates receives a phonecall, which sees him depart for London. With Robert’s warning to remain calm ringing in his ears, does Bates heed the Earl’s caution not to lose his temper with Vera?
Ethel is struggling to look after her baby. Mrs Hughes has been helping Ethel until she is discovered by Carson.

In a sad and grey episode, the difficulties of those in the house rise to the surface all at once. A major spanner is thrown into the works when an injured soldier stakes a claim to the title of Downton. Matthew’s future as Earl is cast into doubt and his bitterness over his injuries, broken engagement and altered future shows through his dignified response. Edith shares his disappointment as the family refuses to recognise the man she once loved as the Crawley cousin who went missing in the Titanic disaster.
Disappointment faces Mr Bates and Anna as Bates’ protracted divorce wears on. Isobel is sidelined once and for all as both the Countess and Dowager Countess team up to take the house back for private family use. Even the stolid Carson has his world turned upside down by a request he feels unable to refuse from Lady Mary. For her part, Lady Mary is torn between her fiancé and her fierce loyalty to Matthew, but Sir Richard Carlisle soon brings her attention to her duties and proper direction.
Thomas and O’Brien cook up some serious schemes over fags in the back yard. The Earl has to dine by himself and the new maid steps in with some chatter about her son’s hopes for grammar school. Mrs Hughes does her best for Ethel, but the Major refuses to play a part in her life. The episode ends with a hugely important piece of news that will create great unease amongst those with secrets to keep in Downton, secrets that could tear apart the estate, family and even Sir Richard’s newspaper empire.

Thomas Howes says there are 'no divas' on the Downton Abbey set

Downton Abbey star Thomas Howes was thrilled when he picked up his sсript for the second series and found a note on the back from writer Julian Fellowes, saying, `To Thomas, the nicest of all of us.'
Thomas plays second footman William Mason in the period drama.
He admitted that he was initially he was nervous about acting alongside such greats as Dame Maggie Smith.
He told the Daily Mail. "I was so nervous working with Maggie to start with, but she broke the ice immediately.
"We were filming a scene in which I was serving in between her and somebody else and there was a problem with a camera which meant that for continuity purposes I had to freeze in position with my arm out holding a soup bowl. Suddenly she was stroking me.
"`Oh love, put that down', she said and had the shot stopped so I could rest my arm. She's actually a pussycat."
Discussing Hugh Bonneville, who plays Lord Grantham, Thomas said: "During filming I'll occasionally corpse a fellow cast member.
"One day Hugh did the same to me. We were filming a dining room scene where for a moment a camera was on me and most other people but not Hugh.
"I had to stand still with my arm out, so Hugh created a rabbit out of his napkin and let it gently graze along the edge of the table and then start nibbling its way up my arm."
He added: "We're always giggling. Our unofficial theme tune on set was, `When you're alone and life is making you lonely you can always go: DownTON' - even Maggie joined in with it.
"There are so many greats in the cast but they're not at all diva-ish. It's like being in a family. We've spent eight months together over the past two years, sleeping together, eating together."

Not that she has much spare time. She’s filming Anna Karenina “somewhere in Europe” at the moment then, on Monday, she’s back at Berkshire’s Highclere Castle, where Downton is set, to start work on the Christmas special.
She is endearingly grateful for the opportunity to work alongside a stellar cast, including Hugh Bonneville and Dame Maggie Smith, her on-screen grandmother.
“It’s a wonderful feeling to be part of such a phenomenon,” she says.
“I love playing Mary; she’s absolutely fascinating. She seems cynical and calculating, but in truth she’s indecisive and troubled, which makes her complicated and human and, as a result, hugely rewarding to play.”
If Lady Mary is a member of the idle rich, then the contrast with Michelle couldn’t be more pronounced.
The daughter of an Irish truck driver turned surveyor and a mother who delivers meals on wheels, she grew up in the unremarkable suburb of Chadwell Heath in Essex.
“Oh, no – Lady Mary would never have talked to me – I would have been in service,” she says.
“In fact, I asked my nan recently if any of our family had been in service and she reckons they were.”
